The First Picnic!

It’s officially Spring! Not because the clocks have changed, or because we’ve just had Easter, but because it’s finally warm enough to go on picnics again! Hooray!

There really is nothing that beats some al fresco dining and I believe the key ingredients are a large picnic rug to sit on to avoid a damp rump, a roomy picnic backpack with enough crockery for all, plenty of great food and lots and lots of sunshine and space to run wild, discover nature and explore!

So, as the mercury rose to record-breaking levels (for this year anyway), we had our first picnic of the year. We jumped in the car and headed to Blean Woods where we discovered wildflowers lining the woodland path, another sure sign of the world waking up from its winter slumbers.

And then we laid out our picnic spread of apple slices, mini sausage rolls, scotch eggs, finger sandwiches, grapes, yoghurt tubes, crisps, and the pièce de résistance, Mr Kipling cakes. Because, life’s better with cake (and sunshine of course)! The perfect way to end an indulgent lunch and fuel an afternoon of exploring, playing and fresh air.

The girls clambered over fallen trees…

homemade woodland den

…built dens to shelter from the hot sun…

butterfly on gorse

…delighted in spotting butterflies and bumble bees, still sleepy from the long winter…

…watched in awe at giant ants’ nests…

woodland walk

…and gathered posies of flowers to wear in our hair.

Let’s just hope this is the first picnic of many!
