Lasting Change

Lasting Change

For some months now, I’ve been talking about Team Honk and the blogger relay which is still making its way around the country. But what exactly is it we’re trying to raise money for? There are lots of projects, both here in the UK and abroad, that will benefit from the additional funding the money we are raising as a team we provide.

lasting change

As Saturday is International Women’s Day (#iwd2014), the Team Honk founders have left their families behind to fly to Tanzania to visit some of these projects, run by the Gatsby Trust. Projects that will give not just women a chance but their families and communities too. The Gatsby Trust educates women and their partners on their rights, while providing support and training for them to start their own businesses and get them off the ground.

These are women who are seen primarily as caregivers, as wives and mothers. Women who are hindered by a lack of basic education, limited numeracy and literacy. Accessing the finance needed to get a business off the ground is affected by these factors and even when they do succeed, they face harassment and blackmail from those supposed to protect them.

With the support of the The Gatsby Trust behind them, 1000 women entrepreneurs have a real chance to make a change, not just to their own lives and those of their families, but those of their entire community as the ripple effect of their success hits home.

Tanya, Penny and Annie will be blogging and tweeting about what they see firsthand during their visit to Tanzania as they visit the women who have already been helped to make a #LastingChange.

Lasting change

Women like Lucy above, who through mentoring and training with the Gatsby Trust, has been given the confidence to develop her creative handcrafting business and to network after moving from the countryside to the city with her husband’s work. She is keen to expand her business and use her teaching skills to train other women who want to start up their own craft and textile businesses. That’s the ripple effect I mentioned before.

If you would like to help make a difference, there are lots of ways to do so, no matter how limited you are by time.
