Despite returning to work on Wednesday, more amazing weather and the unexpected visit from my parents has given the week an extended holiday feel.
We’ve been doing some radical gardening, pruning the fruit trees, harvesting the fruit, and of course enjoying some ice cream breaks.
We had a day out to a local country park called Fowlmead.
We took the balance bike and scooters and a lot of fun in the adventure playground there.
Then we had a fantastic barbecue, at my parents house’. I was enjoying myself so much, I didn’t want to leave, and wished someone could have taken the girls home to bed while we cracked open (oh sorry, it was already open, I meant finished off) the wine!
We went with friends to a public paddling pool that I didn’t know existed before this week and all enjoyed cooling down in the water before a picnic on the grass.
We had an afternoon on the beach and I finally went for a swim in the sea with my dad while my mum kept an eye on the girls. Then they made sandcastles with my dad and then we all had ice creams – of course!
My parents babysat for the evening giving us a chance to nip out for dinner before sitting on the King’s Steps and watching the sun setting over the calm sea of Margate – something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but can’t properly enjoy with children!
And then, on the hottest day of the week, we got out our own (much smaller) paddling pool and the girls played in that and then played “chicken” with the water sprinkler that attaches to the hosepipe. Bunny was far more daring (and wet) than her sister!
The week finished with rain, but both girls were exhausted so were content to have a quick play in the garden while the sun was still out, before retiring to watch films for the afternoon. It also gave me some time in the kitchen to make cherry coulis ice cream, pizza and peanut butter (although the jury’s out on that one still!).
My parents have now gone back to France for a couple of months, I have a full week at work next week and busy afternoons preparing for Bunny starting school the following week. The weather may yet improve again, but our summer is over for this year. We have a beach festival and new Farmer’s Market to look forward to next weekend (and mummy even has a cheeky night out with friends planned – fancy dress and all!). There will be fireworks as part of a performance art event the following weekend and at the start of October, we have the Broadstairs Food Festival to get excited about (and if you’re like me and love food, there is a lot to be excited about!). So still lots of outdoor fun to be had even with the fast approaching autumn. But a few more indoor days too which might be a nice change!
